The innovator behind One-Moment Meditation®, Martin Boroson is emerging as an inventive new voice in the next generation of meditation teachers. He has taught his radical new take on meditation in leadership seminars, hospitals, public workshops, and the media, as well as in busy urban train stations, a farmyard, and a cabaret. His book, One-Moment Meditation: Stillness for People on the Go, has been published in eight languages, including Japanese and Chinese.
Martin recently delivered training in One-Moment Meditation® to physicians at Kaiser Permanente, and to faculty and staff of the UC Davis Medical Center. In April 2010, he devised and presented the series, Transform Stress in 30 Days with One-Moment Meditation® for Oprah.com.
Born and raised in New York, Martin had a precocious first career as a teenage political activist. At thirteen, he formed an organization just for people too young to vote that became a significant force in local politics. At sixteen, he became a Legislative Aide to a member of the New York State Assembly. He then studied philosophy at Yale and earned an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
Finding the analytic, quantitative techniques of traditional management useful but limited, he then set out to explore other ways of knowing. He began intensive study of the works of C. G. Jung, trained in breathwork and transpersonal psychology with Dr. Stanislav Grof, worked as a psychotherapist, and formed a theatre company in Ireland—awarded funding by the Arts Council to "develop innovation and excellence in the arts." This company, The Temenos Project, produced a five-year collaboration with the Kyoto Performing Arts Center, exploring Eastern and Western modes of communication through the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. Martin is an accredited member of the European Association of Psychotherapy, President of the Association for Holotropic Breathwork™ International, and a formal student of Zen.
His work now brings together these diverse perspectives into simple, practical tools for transformation. He has delivered training to senior executives from many companies and consults to organizations on the applications of a meditative mind to leadership, decision-making, and innovation. For the Institute for Management Studies, he created the course Becoming a Next-Generation Leader, and for The Irish Management Institute, the course The Wisdom Decision, a model for holistic decision-making.
In the U.K., Martin devised and presented the light-hearted “Take-a-Mooment™” campaign for the Federation of Organic Milk Groups, consisting of radio interviews on nineteen BBC stations in which he persuaded the radio hosts (and their audiences) to moo with him for stress relief. In Ireland, he created “The National Moment of Stillness,” in which thousands of people stopped driving and stopped working to experience thirty seconds of total silence together, live on national radio. Said the host, Derek Mooney, on the following day, “The whole nation was enthralled.”
Martin is also the author of Becoming Me, a modern creation story, praised by scientists, psychologists, and leaders of many faiths. Becoming Me is used in secular and religious schools to teach interfaith understanding, philosophy for children, and environmental awareness. Said Erwin Laszlo, Science Advisor to the Director General of UNESCO, “Becoming Me undoubtedly captures the emerging spirit of the 21st century.”
