Martin Boroson

"Martin's proposition – that it only takes a moment to find a sense of peace and re-focus the mind – is at once obvious and revolutionary."

Self-Management

At the heart of any attempt to use meditation in the field of leadership development is the idea of self-management. First, this means just being able to be appropriately in charge of your own mind, guaranteeing your ability to focus, solve problems, and behave appropriately.  At a deeper level, it means being able to develop your mind toward higher performance.

In the attached chapter by Jeremy Hunter (with J. Scott Scherer) from The Drucker Difference, the authors do a superb job of showing how meditation and mindfulness can help the knowledge worker in many aspects of self-management, including:

  • Managing your nervous system
  • Paying attention
  • Training perception
  • Focus and attention
  • Concentration
  • Getting over multi-tasking
  • Seeing clearly
  • Developing an impartial spectator
  • Avoiding reactive emotions
  • Developing a mindset for growth

For anyone not convinced of the benefits of meditation training for leadership development and the workplace, please read it.  There's much to chew on in it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly how it might apply to your life and in your workplace.
